Burnet had been a boomtown once before, but that was back in the 1880s, when the Texas Hill Country's first-ever railroad ended here. For a few short years, the little frontier outpost experienced explosive growth while it served as a shipping center for all points west; Burnet became a real town during that time. The boom ended when the railroad was extended; first to Marble Falls, then to Llano and Lampasas. Burnet settled into a calm, pastoral existence, and changes were smaller and slower for the next four decades. We take up the tale near the end of the 1920s.
