In 1929 a handsome young musician named Glenn Exum left his Idaho farm country to play
saxophone for a summer dance band in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming. He fell in love with the mountains,
and returned the next summer to help build trails in the newly created Grand Teton National Park. Here he met a kindred soul in mountain guide Paul
Petzoldt. They became fast friends, and Paul took
Glenn up the Grand Teton in that summer of 1930.
Paul trained Glenn to be a climbing guide, and in
the summer of 1931, on their first trip guiding
together, Glenn made history: wearing leather-cleated football shoes and without a rope, he pioneered a new route up the mountain.
Glenn and Paul formed the Petzoldt-Exum School
of American Mountaineering, teaching people to
climb and guiding them to the summits of the Teton peaks. Glenn made many first and second ascents of difficult Teton routes during the 1930s and 1940s, but was also known for enjoying oddities like taking two dogs up the Grand. After WWII Glenn assumed sole ownership of the school and built it into the premiere climbing school and guide service in the country.
During the fifty years he climbed, Glenn was unmatched for recounting the details of unusual climbs, telling humorous tales, and crooning old
tunes. Imagine a sunset over the Tetons, and Glenn Exum standing tall in the campfire light, telling these stories.
